It’s hard to not feel like it’s tied to your self worth, your art’s worth… oh and it’s also your livelihood. Talk about messing with your nervous system!  It can feel even harder when you realize there is no “industry standard.”  In the first Get Shamele$s workshop in the Creatives Thrive NYC series, we’ll help you:

• Calculate your ideal and minimum rates, including how to account for benefits and unpaid time

• Give you tools and language to understand how your relationship with money connects to negotiating and asking for more

• Practice negotiating and asking for your rates

• Create guidelines for how and when to use sliding scale models

You’re probably already doing this, but let’s give it a fancy name. You’re not just gigging or juggling a bunch of jobs, you’re creating multiple income streams. And it’s not just a fancy name, it’s a way for you to not put all your income eggs in one basket. We’ll have deeper discussions around how and when you make money from and for your art, and pull out the spreadsheets so you can do less juggling and more streamlining. In the workshop, we’ll help you:

• Think and plan more intentionally around how you make your money 

• Ask questions around what money you need to make FROM your art, and what money you need to make FOR your art

• Put together 12 month cash flow projections so you can see into the future

• Create a plan for how to track and assess your income throughout the year

No one ever told us that being an artist or creative also meant being a business owner. We all remember that first check we got…and the first tax bill that came with it the following April. The first and most complicated thing we usually have to tackle is taxes and business structure so we’re dedicating a whole workshop to it. In this workshop, we’ll help you:

• Find manageable ways to separate your business and personal expenses 

• Decide what business structure is right for you and how it can change and progress as your practice grows and settles

• Learn what a business tax deduction is and what you can confidently deduct from your taxes

• Create a checklist for how to systemize your taxes a little bit more this year

…or, the alchemy of collective care. We think of the word alchemy when creating these types of community spaces because that’s what it feels like. We just did the corny thing and looked up the definition and: Alchemy is a power or process that changes or transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way. An inexplicable or mysterious transmuting.

Come-as-you-are is your contribution here - the mixture of everyone’s life experiences, wins and losses, emotions and baggage, is what transmutes the space. You can feel it, even through zoom. We hope to see you here!

Money is emotional and having a budget is great, but doesn’t account for the storms that come, our ever changing needs, and our personal values. Uncover your current relationship with money and learn how to align your spending with your values and have more agency over where you spend your money. In this workshop, we’ll help you:

• Determine your spending values, including “Values” with a capital V, and how to live them on a regular basis

• Create a spending plan that gives you the freedom to spend money on things you love while also taking care of your needs.

• Learn how to prove to yourself that WANTS ARE NEEDS TOO, and yes, you do deserve nice things.

We’re just going to say it - this is the workshop that everyone signs up for but no one shows up for. We all have debt and we all think we’re the only ones who have it. The reality is, the credit and debt system is designed to keep you in their game for as long as possible. And the big cloud over this whole system is the blame and shame we’ve been fed because we “should have known better.” We’ll show you how the entire country systemically got pushed into debt and how you can manage your debt and still have a life. In this workshop, we’ll help you:

• Understand the history of debt and credit so you can stop blaming yourself for a messed up system

• Learn how your credit score is calculated

• Have up to date student loan options and information

• Share multiple debt paydown strategies so you can choose the one that works for your credit score, budget, and income

Let's come together this summer for an in-person Creatives Thrive NYC Paperwork Party with ArtBuilt, Entertainment Community Fund, and Pam & Dyalekt of GET SHAMELE$S.

If you hate dealing with paperwork, if you get anxious just thinking about it, you’re not alone. It’s not you, it’s the paperwork. The system is not designed for us and paperwork is another obstacle to navigating it. No wonder we have so much anxiety and fear around paperwork. If it feels like there is a lot at stake, there is. So much of getting personal financial tasks done revolves around paperwork and forms, which is why it’s time we had a paperwork party, because community always beats capitalism. 

Come with paperwork (bring your laptop!) you’ve been dreading to complete, even though you know it would level up your finances. We’ll bring the safe space and expert guidance. Come as you are, bring what you have, and leave with more clarity and fewer loose ends.

Some ideas for what you can do and what others have done at past paperwork parties:

• Apply for a new credit card or other loan

• Open an IRA or other investment account

• Grant application budget

• Review your credit report and credit score

• Switch banks

• Open a high yield savings account

• Create cash flow projections

• Call a financial institution to reverse a charge, lower a bill, etc.

• Review/consolidate/get out of default student loans 

• Sign up for insurance - life, disability, renters, pet, etc

• Fill out paperwork for passport, drivers license, real ID, etc

• Get to inbox zero 

• Open scary mail/envelopes (physical or digital)

• Any other paperwork or forms you’ve been dreading completing
